Absolutely amazing~
This place is perfect: it’s clean, cozy, well-equipped, and next to everything you could possibly want or need. Fantastic neighborhood! As other reviewers have mentioned, Helga is terrific about being in touch, helping with anything you need, and providing solid advice about the neighborhood and the apartment itself. We absolutely loved our stay on the first floor and think anyone else will too. Some tips: look in the cabinets before you head out to grocery shop — during our stay, there was an abundance of olive oil, sugar, rice, flour and instant coffee, so you might not need to buy these things. Just down the street are two places of interest: a lovely soup restaurant, Krydlegin Hjörtu, which has a fantastic salad bar, bread, and all-you-can-eat soup for a really reasonable price (a rarity in Reykjavik!) Also be sure to check out the really cool bar in the Kex Hostel — you won’t regret having a few drinks there. This apartment exceeded our expectations and we’re already planning our next trip back!   Lindsay USA

Well located, well stocked, clean, charming, great for self-sufficient types.

We’re a newly married couple in our 40s who sought a central location with a homey feel, and we got exactly what we were hoping for and more. It’s around the corner from Laugavegur and a couple of blocks from Skolavordustigur, the two main shopping streets, as well as 1 block away from a discount grocery store (open only 12-6pm most days, take note!), a few blocks away from Pro Car car rental at the harbor, around the corner from the Sundholl swimming pool and hot pots (almost all locals inside), and a few blocks downhill from Hallgrimskirjka and Cafe Loki, where you can buy just 4 bites of hakarl, the awful, disgusting (but practically compulsory!) rotten shark meat delicacy.
Slightly further afield (maybe 3/4 mile, very walkable) are several art museums, Vinbudin (state run liquor store), whale watching tours at the harbor, and the best Icelandic hot dog (pylsur) stand, as well as a great restaurant called Icelandic Fish & Chips. Because eating out in Reykjavik can be quite expensive, it was a relief that the apartment has such a well stocked kitchen–everything you need to make a 4-course meal from scratch. We had a few necessities left from previous tenants (butter, coffee, pasta, olive oil) so it’s worth taking stock before shopping. The kitchen and bathroom have been remodeled within the past 10 years (except kitchen stove, which is old but works fine), and the whole apartment has a well tended feeling. The house is 3 dwellings total: an apartment the second floor, the first floor one we stayed in, and there’s a basement apartment, though I’m not sure if it’s rented out or occupied by a caretaker. Note that the walls between the 1st and 2nd floor apartments are pretty thin, but compared to what I’ve heard the tourist hotel areas (down by the museums) are like, with drunken bar crawlers shouting in the streets till 4am, the neighborhood around Grettisgata 55 is extremely quiet. The thin walls were literally the only drawback, and not enough to keep me from giving it 5 stars. There is free access to laundry in the basement. The neighborhood is full of local Reykjavikers, not a bunch of tourists, which we loved. Helga was reliable and professional to deal with from start to finish, and offered much more than she had to, including recommendations and locations for restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, and fish markets (for saving money by cooking dinner at home). We’d definitely stay in Helga’s apartment again, and recommend it to friends.

Wonderful visit!
We picked Grettisgata as our base for a 4 day exploration of Reykjavik and surroundings in mid February! What a great apartment! We loved the location so close to the main shopping street, supermarket and restaurants, while the apartment was in a quiet little street off to the side, so very peaceful. The apartment was really well equipped and had everything you could need, including WiFi. We felt right at home, the arrangement from first contact with Helga to follow up after our visit was effortless and highly professional and we would definitely return and can highly recommend this rental.

My mother and I have just returned from a short break in Iceland, and were so glad we rented this lovely little flat. We had the top floor – 2 bedrooms, living room, brilliantly equipped kitchen and shower room with a great shower. The flat was warm and comfortable and perfect for our needs. The location was great – one block away from the main street and 5 minutes walk from the sea. We both loved the beds – I’ve returned home thinking I need a new mattress as mine’s nowhere near as comfortable! We went on a couple of tours that dropped people back at their hotels on the way back and we were so pleased to be staying in our cosy city centre flat with lots of character rather than one of the big, impersonal hotels on the edge of town. (The tour companies don’t collect from privately rented appartments, but there are 2 sets of appartments in the same street that they will collect from – Grettisbourg and Grettisgata.) I’m already planning a return visit in the summer, and looking forward to sipping an evening drink on the little balcony overlooking the garden.

It was one of the best holiday flats we’ve stayed. Very smooth and helpful communication, the flat was tastefully decorated with real vintage furniture and equipment. We were able to take a full advantage of the location and the car that we also rented from the owner. We truly enjoyed our stay, thanks to the flat!

Fantastic stay in Iceland!
We stayed for 5 days in this cosy flat dowtown Reykjavik. 2minutes away from the main streets and an enjoyable family municapal pool (hot tubs). the sea is also 5minutes away. We travelled with a kid (1 year old) and the flat was very confortable and well furbished.
The landlady offered us the possibility to rent her car (SUV), necessary in Iceland.
I highly recommand this rent to anyone from 2 to 4 people.

My mother and I had a brilliant time in Iceland, and were so glad we rented your lovely little flat. It was just perfect for our needs – warm, comforatble, perfect location, and a brilliantly equipped kitchen. We both loved the beds – I’ve returned home thinking I need a new matress as mine’s nowhere near as comfortable! We went on a couple of tours that dropped people back at their hotels on the way back and we were so pleased to be staying in our cosy city centre flat with lots of character rather than one of the big, impersonal hotels on the edge of town. We’ve both decided we’d like to go back to Iceland during the summer – my mother is a very keen birdwatcher, so would like to return in May to see puffins etc, while I’d love to see the whales. We’ll definitely keep the details of your flat in case we do go back, and I’ve already recommended it to may friends.

Cozy Place Close to Everything
This place worked out great for the two of us. It is a cozy warm apartment where you instantly feel welcomed by the thoughtful layout/decor and cleanliness. It is well heated with plenty of Iceland’s famous geothermal hot water. It was nice to have a kitchen and dining area with all the basic appliances for the in between moments of relaxing at the apartment. It was also nice to have access to the laundry machine downstairs, especially when we ended up with muddy clothes after our horseback riding trip. It is in a very convenient location in that you can walk to anything you want to do, including the bus station (15 minutes). All the tour companies offer to pick you up, but for some reason they had a hard time with the address, but this was easily rectified by asking to be picked up on the corner of Grettisgata and Baronsstigur (which is the main corner of the apartment) or even better yet, ask to be picked up at Reykjavik Backpackers Hostel (5 minute walk) where you can sit comfortably, enjoy a cup of coffee, and have the option of a fairly inexpensive breakfast buffet while you wait for the shuttle bus. Overall we would highly recommend this property. The owner, Helga, was always prompt and helpful in her correspondence. The only thing I can foresee that might be bothersome to some people would be that there are times when you can hear the upstairs activity.

The appartement was complete and comfortable, in the center of Reykjavik! Nice place to stay and a perfect spot to start a daytrip. Everything you need is in the app. or you can find it in a very close area. Nice restaurants and also a supermarket. Reykjavik is a verry clean and relaxed capital. Good atmosphere. We rented the car as well and it was perfect!

Helga was a great host, although we never personally met she was always onto it and was very informative and catered for all our needs. The apartment is in such a great location and was stylish and again catered for all our needs. Anytime we are back in Iceland we would be sure to stay with Helga again and recommend this apartment for anyone planning a visit.

Cosy & charming flat
Very cosy flat to feel at home right away – situated in the very heart of Reykjavik, loads of restaurants, bars, shops just around the corner, but still very quiet even on the weekends. Little garden in the backyard with lots of friendly cats visiting which was exciting for our little boy. Fully equipped, nothing missing – great place!

We stayed a week at the appartment and enjoyed our stay a lot. The appartment is very well situated both for the old town and for shops as well as public transport. We were a party of 5, 2 parents and 3 young adults. While the accomdation is not large, it is well designed to make the most of the available space. My wife and I shared the bedroom and the 3 younger members of the party camped out in the lounge. With a little negotiation and some planning as to the use of the bathroom it all worked out well. Parking on the street was no problem and the rental car companies bring the car to you and for returns come to your dining room table to sort the bill out, which was all very efficient. The appratment has blinds and pull down curtains for the windows which you really need if you are not used to 24 hour a day light. Even with blinders on I noticed that part of your awareness says it is still daylight which inhibits deeper sleep. I have to say though I was the only member of the party to experience this, the others snorred the night through like trolls in hibernation. All in all we can recommend the appartment and if we were to come again to Iceland we would certainly look to see if it was available.

Paradise found
We had a wonderful time in Reykjavik and this wonderful apartment was part of the reason. Close to everything we were able to walk everywhere in town. 1 block off the main shopping street Laugavegur with groceries only a cople blocks away. You can tell that the apartment has just been totally redone and is spotlessly clean. Doulbe bed in the bedroom and an extra daybed in the living room for one more. It has all the neccesities one could need. We will definately be back!!! May bring friends and rent out the whole house. Thanks again.

Great, clean little apartment in a fantastic location. It’s close enough to downtown Reykjavik that you can walk everywhere, but far enough away that it’s still in a nice quiet spot. Everything you could need for a short or long stay was provided, including even a hair dryer and dishwasher, along with access to a washer and dryer. I’d definitely recommend this property to anyone going to Reykjavik! Helga was also lovely, sending me helpful maps/instructions on how to get to the apartment, as well as a great list of local restaurants to try.

We stayed in the ground floor flat, which is on a quiet street in central Reykjavik. The flat is great – nicely furnished, cosy and it has everything you need. Helga is also very friendly and helpful, and even drew us a map from the bus terminal to the apartment for our arrival, which was really useful. I would recommend this to anyone and hope to visit again soon. Takk fyrir!

I highly recommend this apartment in the centre of Reykjavik! It’s very cosy with a nice atmosphere and we felt immediately at home. The apartment is well equipped and very clean. The main street, the Laugavegur, is only two minutes walk (there’s also a supermarket). When you’re planning a trip to Reykjavik and you want your own private apartment, this one on Grettisgata is perfect!
